Danes drink a lot of alcohol, and (more than most other Europeans) they are also against state interference in their alcohol consumption. These are the results of a report published recently by Eurobarometer. According to Mette Grønkjær, a PhD scholar at Aarhus University, Danes drink in many different social contexts – and people who don’t drink are regarded as abnormal. The high level of alcohol consumption kills 3,000 Danes a year, and she believes that campaigns to cut alcohol consumption should not only focus on the number of drinks you consume, but also seek to influence the culture of drinking in Denmark.
