A slimmer university in future

A government taskforce on lower-secondary education recently recommended the creation of a research-based teacher-training programme in Denmark, and as a result Aarhus University is once again applying for approval of a degree programme to train teachers. The rector of Aarhus University, Lauritz B. Holm-Nielsen, is surprised that the government regards this kind of degree programme as a new departure.
“We proposed it way back in 2007, and even as late as this spring we applied for approval of a research-based teacher-training programme in science subjects,” says Holm-Nielsen, who believes that Aarhus University could also meet the recommendation of the taskforce for 200 PhD graduates in educational theory and didactics in lower-secondary education over the next ten years.
