The National Environmental Research Institute was set up in 1989 by amalgamating the Danish Environmental Protection Agency’s laboratories for sea pollution, fresh water, air pollution and analytical chemistry with the centre for soil ecology. The National Environmental Research Institute is responsible for Denmark’s environmental research, and is an internationally recognised capacity in the fields of strategic research, monitoring and consulting. It operates at three sites in Denmark, with headquarters in Roskilde. In 2007 the National Environmental Research Institute became part of the University of Aarhus.
